Did You Know?

  • "A Place of Rest": The name Mattapoisett comes from the Wampanoag language and literally translates to "a place of resting." It is one of only 15 towns in Massachusetts (out of 351) that kept its original Native American name rather than being named after a person or a city in England.

  • The Moby Dick Connection: During the 1800s, Mattapoisett was a world-class shipbuilding hub, producing over 400 vessels. One of the most famous was the Acushnet, the very ship that Herman Melville sailed on before deserting in the South Seas—an experience that famously inspired him to write Moby Dick.

• A Traveling House: Ned’s Point Lighthouse, built in 1838, used to have a stone keeper’s house right next to it. In 1923, after the light was automated, the entire house was loaded onto a barge and floated across Buzzards Bay to become the keeper's house for the Wing’s Neck Light in Bourne, where it still stands today.
