3 Common Causes of Roof Damage

Apr 30, 2024

Roofs are usually made of durable material, but they aren't indestructible. Certain things can cause roof damage. Here are three of the most common causes of people needing roofing repairs and how you can avoid them.

1. Hail

Hail can cause a lot of major damage. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, hail does roughly $15 billion in damage to American cars, homes, and crops every year. The best way to avoid costly roofing repairs is to schedule regular roof inspections. That way, any holes or weaknesses in the roof can be caught beforehand. Then, your home will be able to withstand even the largest hailstorms.

2. Age

Time can be rough on roofs. The older they get, the better chance of them breaking off or curling. Both of which can lead to leaks. You should have your roof regularly inspected. That way, your roof should be ready and any necessary repairs will be completed. In our experience, depending on the weather and maintenance, your roof can last several decades if properly maintained.

3. Water

Water damage can be incredibly detrimental to your roof. If there are areas of your roof with missing or curled shingles that you don't know about, every time it rains, your home is sustaining even more water damage. Water damage in your roof can lead to leaks within your home, structural issues in your roof, mold or mildew growth, and other problems. What's worse is that deep-set water damage cannot be repaired. If your roof is sagging due to a surplus of water soaking it, you'll need to replace your roof.

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home. It shields you from the elements, keeps water out when properly maintained, and helps insulate your home. If you suspect any issues, you should contact a professional to take a look. However, even if there aren't any noticeable issues with your roof, our team recommends having annual inspections completed on your roof.
